A banda de folk rock Fotheringay foi foi formada em 1970 pela cantora/compositora Sandy Denny depois que ela saiu do Faiport Convention. O nome da banda é uma referência à musica, do Faiport (incluida no álbum "What We Did on Our Holidays" de 1969) que Sandy mais gosta.
Dois integrantes do Eclection, Trevor Lucas e Gerry Conway e dois do Poet and the One Man Band, Jerry Donahue e Pat Donaldson, completaram o line-up.
