O Three Man Army foi formado pelos irmãos Adrian Gurvitz e Paul Gurvitz, que eram do The Gun. Após a dissolução da The Gun, Adrian tocou com Byddy Mile e Paul no Parrish & Gurvitz. Depois eles se reuniram para formar a Three Man Army. Seu álbum de estréia, "A Third of a Lifetime", contou com a participação de vários bateristas, incluindo Miles, Carmine Appice e Mike Kellie (Spooky Tooth). Tony Newman (Sounds Incorporated e David Bowie) juntou-se à banda na gravação dos outros dois álbuns. Newman saiu da banda para tocar com Bowie e os irmão Gurvitz se uniram a Ginger Baker no Baker Gurvitz Army.
