O Velvet Underground foi uma banda de vanguarda na década de 60, caracterizada por um estilo experimental, pouco comercial para a época. A banda tinha como mentor intelectual (e, mais importante, financiador) o artista plástico americano Andy Warhol, que se dizia cansado da pintura e promovia incursões por outros campos artísticos como a música e o cinema. Apesar das suas grandes músicas, a banda não fez sucesso, seus álbums não vendiam muito e sempre havia conflitos internos. A inclusão de Nico no VU foi imposta por Andy Warhol, mas ocorreu rejeição e conflito por parte da banda, como uma forma de objeção o nome do album foi "The Velvet Underground & Nico", excluindo-a, de certa forma, da banda.
